This is a day of increasing avalanche danger as the bad weather continues. For inexperienced groups, this is a good day to enjoy the fresh snow from yesterday in the ski area. Experienced groups should look for large start zones above them, even when in the woods. When visibility is poor, it is harder to notice these things. Also, streams and bushes in the forest have not yet completely filled in. Stormy weather is forecast to continue through the 24th, so we recommend a large safety margin. Have a good day.
Beware of instability at the interface between new and old snow or within new snow. Even if you are in the forest, it is necessary to consider that avalanches can occur on partially open steep slopes.
Yesterday (21st), a naturally occurring glide avalanche was reported on a steep, sunny slope at a low elevation.
Below 1,200 meters elevation, new snow is on top of the wet accumulation from the rain that began falling yesterday. The snowfall that began yesterday afternoon is 15-20 cm at the foot of the mountain and 30-40 cm in the forested areas. On the main ridge, winds are blowing from the north at an average of 15 m/s and a maximum of 25 m/s.
Today, a strong winter pressure pattern is expected to develop and cold air is expected to influence the area. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting snow with thunderstorms in some areas and daytime highs of 3 °C (37 °F) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -1.4 °C (as of 5:00 pm), and 22 cm of snow has fallen in the past 24 hours. The Nagano District Meteorological Observatory forecast 50 cm of snowfall in the next 24 hours until 18:00 on the 22nd for the mountainous areas of the Ohoku region at 16:28 on the 21st. Heavy snow advisories are in effect for Otani Village, Hakuba Village, and Omachi City.
