A new snowfall cycle begins. Watch for increased snowfall and wind-driven movement. Watch out for "terrain traps" where even small avalanches can have serious consequences. Large open glide cracks are reported on many slopes. It is important for the group to be in the habit of checking each other as these can be hidden by new snowfall. There are also reports that the creek is not completely filled in, so be careful with your lines and assume that there are large holes in the creek bottom.
Strong westerly winds have begun to blow again since last night. Watch for new wind slabs to form.
Yesterday (25th), several very large naturally occurring avalanches were observed above the treeline, probably during or immediately after snowfall. In the forest zone, relatively small slab avalanches triggered by skiers were reported on leeward slopes. On sunlit slopes below 1,000 m elevation, loose snow avalanches and glide avalanches of size 1.5-2 have also been reported.
The snowpack brought in by the series of snowfalls that continued through the 24th is settling steadily. In the alpine areas, very strong north to westerly winds have blown the snow away, forming firm slabs on the leeward side. Even below the treeline, the structure is strongly affected by the wind and contains multiple wind slabs. Yesterday's warming and sunny slopes have formed crusts on the sunlit slopes. The snowfall that began earlier this morning is on top of the crust.
The Japan Meteorological Agency forecasts that a front will pass over the Honshu area today (26th), bringing a winter pressure pattern to the area. As a result, it is forecast to be cloudy in the northern part of Japan and snowy over a wide area at night, with a daytime high of 9°C. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -2.5 °C (as of 5:00), and 7 cm of snow has fallen in the past 24 hours.
