Continued vigilance is needed as we travel through early-season conditions. The overnight warm tempreature will result in variable snow conditions at lower elevation. Be wary of hidden hazard under thin snow cover. Visibility may lower in the afternoon if winds speeds increase alongside blown snow.
We continue to observe cornice development across easterly aspects at higher elevations. Pockets of isolated low volume wind slab have been found below ridgeline in protected areas. If wind speeds increase as forecast today further snow transportation will occur onto lee slopes.
Observed from a distance in yesterday’s weather clearance a natural size 1.5 has been reported on Mt Yotei Makkari Terrace Bowl at 1350m. The debris from this slide had partially refilled and it was expected it had occurred within the previous 48 hours.
Overnight warm tempreatures will have dramtaically effected the snow surface from the previous day at lower elevations. The mid pack remains supportive with latest new snow settling and gaining strength. Previously buried crust can be found up to a metre below the surface but little in the way of concern has been observed.
Broken sunshine in the morning will make way for increased winds from the west gusting to moderate at higher elevations. We expect snowfall to also increase later today into tonight.
