Travel and Terrain Advice

With a number of recorded avalanches on the 28th, a cautious approach should be taken at all elevations and aspects today to assess the upper snowpack for instability. Look for signs of where the latest new snow has been transported and be wary of natural trigger points such as convex rolls. Low snow hazards remain below the treeline.

Winds from early in the week have transported the latest snowfall onto lee slopes creating slab at higher elevations these slabs appear to reactive to single person loads.

An instability within the latest new snow is resulting in avalanche activity in the treeline. Be wary of areas such as depressions or gullies where the snow accumulation is higher. Take the time to text the upper snowpack and be mindful of terrain traps below you before committing to a slope.

概要

Avalanche


Multiple natural and human triggered avalanches were recorded on the 28th. These include a size 2 wind slab triggered on a SE aspect at 700m meters in the Mowia backcountry resulting in a full burial. The individual caught was dug out unharmed after approximately 6 minutes by a guide from another group who was in the area and witnessed the avalanche. Also reported was a size 2 in the Niseko backcountry where a skier was partially buried in a slab released on a E aspect at 600m. The person was buried above their knees and was able to extract themselves unharmed.

Snowpack


A mid-storm instability appears to be present within the latest new snow with sunshine on the 28th resulting in the upper snowpack becoming active with natural and human-triggered avalanches observed across easterly slopes. A crust can be found buried 30 to 80cm from previous warming with the mid to lower pack remaining well bonded and settled.

Weather


Light snow flurries are expected throughout the day with moderate northwest winds that will increase into the evening.
