Travel and Terrain Advice

High elevations due to heavy snowfall are dangerous avalanche conditions. Be aware of the presence of storm slabs on open steep slopes where there are few trees to anchor the snowpack. Also watch for triggered wind slabs on steep slopes just below ridges and branch ridges. Be aware of the presence of large avalanche start zones in alpine areas, even if you yourself are in an area with low slopes with many anchors, such as tree line. There are exposed "terrain traps" such as deep gullys, cliffs, rocks, and standing timber that can increase damage even if the size of the avalanche that occurs is small. Be careful of falling into gully holes. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting snowfall during the day. Please be aware of changes in the amount of snowfall and wind effects in the coming days.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (29th), a size 1.5 slab avalanche was observed on the east slope at around 1800m elevation in the Kagura area, which is thought to have occurred during stormy weather, but the observation area was limited due to poor visibility.

Snowpack

The snowfall that began in the evening of the 26th, and which was caused by the stormy weather, has covered more than 150 cm in many places on top of the old snow that has been settling. On south-facing slopes, crusts have formed on the boundaries of the old snow, requiring caution in bonding. Strong winds from the north to the west last night are expected to cause wind slabs to form on the downwind slopes.

Weather

As of 3:00 pm, there has been about 20 cm of snowfall around Amedas Fujiwara since around noon yesterday, and it is gradually beginning to settle. Around 1,300 m elevation, about 30 cm of snow had fallen. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the northern part of Gunma Prefecture is forecast to be clear and cloudy in the morning and evening due to the influence of a pressure trough and moist air, although the area will be covered by high pressure.
