It is an important day for terrain selection. The snowfall has subsided, but the instability of the snowpack has not yet been resolved. Instead of jumping into big slopes, we need to start with small, well supported, safe terrain with gentle slopes and check the snow cover. It is important to get into the habit of thinking about the size and slope of the terrain. In gully terrain, snow cover varies depending on the direction of the terrain's sides. Look for areas where the wind has less influence and avoid wind slabs. Use conservative route-setting, find regrouping points off avalanche terrain, and ensure basic group management.
Watch out for steep slopes on the downwind side. Be aware of changes in wind direction during the activity.
No new avalanche bulletin was reported yesterday (29th), but information is limited due to the small number of people entering the mountain.
The snowpack brought about by the snowfall cycle that began on the 26th is slowly settling, but yesterday, from dawn to early afternoon, there was another very strong snowfall, and once again we saw a large increase in the snowpack. In the higher elevation areas, strong north to west winds were blowing last evening and early this morning. The probability of a new wind slab forming is high.
The Japan Meteorological Agency forecasts clear skies in the northern part of Japan, cloudy morning and evening, and daytime high temperatures of 6 °C. High pressure is expected to prevail today (30th), but the area will be affected by a pressure trough and moist air. At the AMeDAS Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -8.4 °C (as of 5:00), and 24 cm of snow has fallen in the past 24 hours.
