1. In higher elevations, watch for newly formed wind slabs on lee aspects. When you notice cracking between your skis, this may be a sign to back off and find lower elevation, sheltered terrain to ski. 2. With the sun forecasted to come out in the afternoon, monitor surface snow for rapid warming possibly creating new avalanche instabilities. Search out more shaded, sheltered terrain.
Winds in the alpine are forecasted to decrease but continue to transport snow onto the leeward slopes.
Some new snow continued to fall last night onto previously loaded slopes keeping storm slabs a problem to monitor. If it becomes sunny in the afternoon, these storm slabs may become more reactive.
A human triggered size 1 storm slab avalanche was observed on Dec 29 on the east aspect of Mt Yotei around 1200m elevation.
15-30cm of new snow has been deposited in the last 24 hours. A sun crust from Dec 28 is buried on solar aspects.
Light snowfall in the morning and possible sun in the afternoon. The winds are decreasing and the temperature remains cold.
