This is a day to watch for rising temperatures and future weather changes. At lower elevations, rainfall and high temperatures will increase the risk of glide avalanches on slopes that already have glide cracks. Obstacles and other hazards hidden by fresh snow will also be exposed. Meanwhile, at higher elevations, watch out for the upcoming wind and snow intensification. The weather is obviously going to worsen, so please plan your activities with this in mind. May the coming year be a good one for all of you.
Depends on rainfall conditions
No new avalanches were reported yesterday (30th). In neighboring Hakuba, avalanches, including spontaneous ones, have been reported on steep slopes where winds are strong.
On slopes unaffected by wind, the snowpack is generally right-side-up structure, and the upper layer of snowpack formed by snowfall since December 26 is settling. On the other hand, at higher elevations, wind slabs are forming under the influence of yesterday's strong winds. In addition, crusts formed by the clear skies of the 25th and 30th are on steep slopes that are strongly affected by solar radiation.
A low pressure system moving eastward over the Sea of Japan is bringing in warm air in the lower levels. The forecast is calling for a shift to a strong winter pattern. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, later westerly winds, strong rain, and daytime high temperatures of 10°C (13 m above sea level) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -3 °C (as of 4:45 pm), with no new snowfall in the past 24 hours.
