Note the unstable wind slabs that remain in the terrain locality. Observe not only the slab formation on the upper snowpack, but also the shape of the slope and what characteristics it has. A convex or unsupported slope is an avalanche-prone terrain. Also, if there is a "terrain trap" below it, such as a deep gully, even a size 1 avalanche can be fatal. When visibility is poor, it is difficult to notice slopes above you. Keep good communication with your companions and continue to play it safe. Have a good holiday.
Beware of locally formed wind slabs, such as convex or unsupported terrain.
Note the very low elevation and slopes with glide cracks already in place.
Yesterday (1st), a size 1 avalanche triggered by a cornice collapse was reported on the northeast slope at 1,800 m elevation. Size 1-2 glide avalanches and snowballs were also observed below 900 m elevation.
At higher elevations upper part of the below treeline, crusts (formed December 30) are present on steep slopes that are strongly affected by solar radiation, and bonding conditions were observed to be not good as of yesterday. At higher elevations, the strong westerly winds are heavily redistributing snow to the leeward side. Where the wind is strong, there are traces of it even in the forest. The snow below this snow cover surface layer is sintering steadily. On the other hand, at very low elevations, glide avalanches are occurring due to the high temperatures and other factors.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting westerly winds, later southerly winds, rain or snow, and a daytime high of 6 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -2 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
