Watch out for unstable snow on very steep slopes. Even small avalanches can have serious consequences if there are "terrain traps" such as cliffs, trees, or deep gullies below them. Also, the weather is obviously getting worse. Imagine having to bivouac in a very difficult environment if you get into trouble. In the forest at lower elevations, watch out for glide cracks hidden by fresh snow.
Watch out for soft slabs on very steep slopes. Light northerly winds (7 to 9 m/s) are blowing on the main ridge and the snow is moving to its leeward side.
Be alert for very steep slopes, where the snow tends to accumulate without the influence of the wind. It is about -15°C (as of 5:00) on the main ridge, and sintering can only proceed slowly.
Yesterday (2nd), several size 1 loose snow avalanches of size 1 were observed on the north slope at elevations of 1,500-1,900 m. All were caused by ski cuts.
The upper part of snowpack has a recent snowfall of about 20 cm, mainly in the northern part of the Hakuba Valley, with little wind influence and low cohesion. The loose snow avalanches observed yesterday are a result of this characteristic. The large amounts of snowfall at the end of the year form the middle layer of the snowpack and are promoting sintering, and no major problems have been observed. At very low elevations, the high temperatures of the past few days have caused wet or wet conditions, and glide cracks have appeared.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, later, southerly winds, cloudy, night, snow, and a daytime high of 6 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -1.9 °C (as of 5:00), and there has been no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
