Weather conditions did not deteriorate as much as forecast, but it is a day to be on the lookout for avalanches. Please choose your terrain carefully and look for slab characteristics in the upper snowpack. Large south-facing terrain has the potential to produce large avalanches. Continue to stop in safe areas, ski one at a time, check for "terrain traps" below, and look for "direct evidence" with good communication with your companions. If you choose the right terrain, this is a great day for great new snow. Have a great day.
Winter snowfall from yesterday afternoon (3rd) was accompanied by strong northerly winds with maximum wind speeds of over 25 m/s at the main ridge line. Currently, the winds have weakened and are now from the east. Be on the lookout for areas where the immediate snow has a tendency to slab. The underlying layer of snow has weak cohesion and is more likely to react to human stimulation.
On a very steep slope, unaffected by wind.
Several size 1 loose snow avalanches of size 1 dry avalanches were reported below treeline yesterday (3rd). No information has been received at higher elevations.
Below treeline, the 20-25 cm of new snow that fell on the morning of the 3rd was a low cohesive snow that was not affected by the wind. The weather then shifted to a winter pressure pattern with the passage of the vortex, and snowfall accompanied by strong northerly winds has added up to about 30 cm by this morning. These most recent snowfalls are on top of a Melt-Freeze crust that formed during a day of clear skies to the south.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, snow, cloudy before noon, sunny later, and a daytime high of 2 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -4 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.) and 9 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
