As you gain elevation, look for the extent to which the upper snowpack is affected by wind. If slab formation is felt, avoid terrain where the terrain does not support snowpack, such as convex or unsupported shapes. Also, remember that on very steep south-facing slopes, the snow cover can change rapidly under the influence of solar radiation. Use terrain wisely by following a principled course of action, such as stopping at safe spots and skiing one at a time. Choose simple terrain with no "terrain traps" and you will have a safe and enjoyable fresh snow run. Have a good day.
In Alpine, winds of about 15 m/s have been blowing since yesterday, redistributing the bulk of the snowfall to the downwind side. Be alert for locally formed slabs, such as on the sides ridges of the outer rim of a volcanic crater
Be careful of the unstable snow that remains partially on very steep slopes.
Yesterday (4th), a size 1 loose snow avalanche or a size 1-1.5 storm slab avalanche was observed below treeline. Both were caused by human stimulation. Data from higher elevations is not available.
Snowfall since January 2 has amounted to 50-60 cm in the upper part of the below treeline. These new snowfalls are accumulating with little wind influence, except at very high elevations, and are slowly settling and sintering. Melt-Freeze crusts (formed on January 1) are buried on the steep south-facing slopes.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a southerly wind, daytime, westerly, cloudy, nightly, clear, daytime high of 7 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -7 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
