Travel and Terrain Advice

At higher elevations, where snow bonding is less likely to progress, be aware of wind slabs that remain locally on extreme steep slopes just below the ridgeline and branch ridges. Be aware of glide cracks on steep slopes, which are thinly concealed in some places, and beware of falls. Localized glide avalanches have been reported on southerly slopes. Do not enter or quickly pass through open glide cracks or the lower part of cliff-like slopes.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (5th), there was a report of multiple spontaneous, loose snow avalanche size 1 and a slab avalanche size 1 observed just below the ridge line on a steep southerly slope in the Kagura area. There was also a report of a glide avalanche observed in the surrounding area.

Snowpack

Low-density snow is 10-15 cm on the surface of the snowpack, and it is gradually settling. On the southerly slopes, thin crusts have formed on the boundary surfaces, so bonding should be noted. The middle to lower layers of snow cover are settling well and bonding is good. Due to the past winds, wind slabs have been formed locally on the downwind side of the ridge and just below the ridge.

Weather

As of 4:00 pm, there has been no snowfall at AMeDAS Fujiwara in the past 12 hours. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting cloudy skies and rain or snow in the evening in the foothills of northern Gunma Prefecture as a low pressure system with a frontal system will pass over the southern sea of Kanto in the evening.
