A rapidly developing low-pressure system is approaching. This is a day to carefully consider the weather changes associated with the approach of this low pressure system and the impact of this weather phenomenon on snowpack. Particular attention should be paid to the newly formed wind slab created by the strong southerly winds. In addition, if there is a significant temperature increase in the afternoon, glide cracks that are forming at very low elevations will be destabilized. The current avalanche danger level is low, but after the low-pressure system passes, extremely cold air will move in and heavy snowfall is forecast. Please consider the terrain and route configuration for easy escape in case of any problems.
Be alert for redistribution of snow due to wind direction changes. Look for new slabs forming in different positions than yesterday.
Yesterday (5th), there was an incident on the southeast slope, near 2,050 m elevation, where one person was swept away by a human-triggered wind slab avalanche, but was partially buried and safe. A size 1 loose snow avalanche was observed on the north to east facing slope from the treeline to the upper part of below treeline.
The snow cover surface layer (January 2-4 morning) proceeded with settling, partly due to yesterday's clear skies. Crusts are forming on surfaces that are lower in elevation than the treeline and are exposed to strong solar radiation. The middle and lower layers of snow cover are advancing sintering, with no noticeably weaker layers to be alarmed by reported. Glide cracks are appearing at lower elevations.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, then from the north, cloudy, rain in the afternoon, snow in places, and daytime highs of 10 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation Hakuba, the temperature is -7.6 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), and no new snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
