Travel and Terrain Advice

A rapidly developing low pressure system is approaching. This is a day to carefully consider the weather changes associated with the approach of this low pressure system and the impact of this weather phenomenon on snow accumulation. Particular attention should be paid to newly formed wind slabs caused by strong southerly winds. Rainfall is also forecast. Glide cracks forming at very low elevations can be rapidly destabilized by rain. The avalanche danger level is currently low, but after the low pressure system passes, extremely cold air will flow in and heavy snowfall is forecast. Please consider the terrain and route configuration for easy escape in case of any problems.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (5th), several size 1 loose snow avalanches were observed at higher elevations.

Snowpack

The previous significant snowfall (January 2-4 morning) and yesterday's clear skies have promoted the settling of the snow. Crusts are forming on surfaces that are lower in elevation than the treeline and are exposed to strong solar radiation. The middle and lower layers of snow cover are advancing sintering, with no noticeably weaker layers to be alarmed by reported. Glide cracks are appearing at lower elevations.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, cloudy skies, rain in the afternoon, and a daytime high of 11 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -4 °C (as of 5:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
