This is a day of increased avalanche danger associated with wind and snow. At higher elevations below the top of the treeline, snowfall has begun with a wind. Even if there is a little new snow, it should be necessary to consider terrain with a higher degree of safety, assuming it is unstable. On days when visibility is poor, it is harder to notice a start zone above you. Even if you are in the woods, be on the lookout for start zones above you. Also, stay away from glide cracks that have already formed.
At higher elevations, snowfall with strong southwest winds began yesterday afternoon.
Very low elevations have been affected by high temperatures and weak rainfall since yesterday. Glide cracks that have already formed should be considered unstable.
No new avalanches were reported yesterday (6th).
The previous snowfall has made ample progress in settling and the snowfall from yesterday is on top of it. The snowfall has been accompanied by southwest winds and high temperatures. As a result, the sintering process of the new snowfall will proceed quickly and form slabs immediately after it falls. In locations where snowfall amounts are at least as high and where the snowpack tends to be unstable, such as in convex terrain, avalanches are more likely to occur from the boundary surface between new and old snow. In addition, although the amount is small, in very low elevation areas, there has also been rainfall since last evening, followed by high temperatures, so the danger of glide avalanches is also increasing.
The JMA is forecasting southerly winds, cloudy skies, night, snow, and a daytime high of 7 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -0.1 °C (as of 5:00 pm), and there has been no increase in the depth of snow in the past 12 hours. The Nagano District Meteorological Office is forecasting 25 cm of snowfall in the 24-hour period ending January 8 at 6:00 am.
