Travel and Terrain Advice

Beware of new snowfall inducing storm slabs on steep slopes. Be careful in areas where there are few trees to support the snowpack and where the slope changes abruptly. Be aware of glide cracks on steep slopes, which are thinly concealed in some areas, and beware of falls due to overstepping. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting continued snowfall. Please act with caution and be aware of increased avalanche danger in the coming days due to increased snowfall and winds.

More caution is needed at higher elevations where snowfall increases.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (7th) there was a report of a small glide avalanche observed on a steep slope near 800m elevation.

Snowpack

About 20-30 cm of new snowfall due to the stormy weather that began last evening is on top of the low-density snowpack, and bonding of the boundary surfaces requires attention. Crusts have formed within the old snow on the south-leaning slopes, while the old snow on other slopes is settling, and bonding with that layer also requires caution without information. At lower elevations, crusts are buried in all directions due to recent rainfall and elevated temperatures.

Weather

As of 6:00 am, 12 cm of snow had fallen in the past 12 hours at AMeDAS Fujiwara, and about 20 cm had fallen at around 1300 m in the Tanigawa-dake area. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting cloudy and sometimes sunny skies at the foot of the mountains in northern Gunma Prefecture, with some snowfall until late afternoon, due to a winter pressure pattern and the influence of a pressure trough and cold air.
