Travel and Terrain Advice

Very dangerous avalanche conditions. Because the fresh snow is so deep, it is necessary to have a steep slope to enjoy the run. This naturally makes it easier to enter terrain that is the perfect slope for avalanches). Also, even very small avalanches can be deadly if they occur in deeply buried terrain such as hollows, gullies, and glide cracks hidden by fresh snow, which, combined with the depth of the fresh snow, can make it a deadly day. Even for experienced groups, careful terrain selection and conservative route setting are required. Think carefully about whether there are any very large start zones above you. For inexperienced groups, this is a good day to ski in ski resort.

Large amounts of snow are falling. Be aware of avalanches originating from vulnerabilities within the fresh snow. Be alert for a combination of avalanche-prone terrain and areas where the surface layer of the snowpack has the characteristics of a slab.

概要

Avalanche

Several size 1.5-2 storm slab avalanches were reported yesterday (8th) during morning control operations at the ski area. In addition, a size 1 loose snow avalanche was reported in the backcountry in the afternoon.

Snowpack

Snowfall since January 6 (rain below 1,200 m elevation) had reached 50 cm by the evening of January 8. Here you can see about 20 cm of snow up to this morning. The cold air inflow has caused low temperatures (elevation 1,570 m, average -9°C; 2,450 m, average -14°C) to continue since yesterday, resulting in sluff and other conditions on very steep slopes with no wind effect.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, cloudy, with occasional snow, and a daytime high of 4 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature was -3.6 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), with 8 cm of snow having fallen in the past 12 hours and 17 cm in the past 24 hours. Winds have subsided somewhat since yesterday, but the main ridge still has northwest winds of up to 15 m/s or more. The Nagano District Meteorological Office is forecasting 40 cm of snowfall in the 24-hour period ending at 6:00 a.m. on January 10.
