Dangerous avalanche conditions. The fresh snow is so deep that it is difficult to enjoy skiing without steep slopes. This naturally makes it easier to enter terrain with sufficient slope (i.e., the perfect slope for avalanches). Also, even very small avalanches can be fatal if they occur in deeply buried terrain such as hollows, gullies, and glide cracks hidden by fresh snow, which, combined with the depth of the fresh snow, can make it a deadly day. Even for experienced groups, careful terrain selection and conservative route setting are required. Think carefully about whether there are any very large start zones above you. For inexperienced groups, this is a good day to ski in.
The snowfall has been heavy. Be aware of avalanches originating from vulnerabilities within the fresh snow. Be alert for a combination of avalanche-prone terrain and areas where the surface layer of the snowpack has the characteristics of a slab.
Yesterday (8th), numerous loose snow avalanches and multiple storm slab avalanches at specific locations were reported in the morning control of the ski area. No new avalanches were reported on the mountain, partly due to the lack of visibility.
Snowfall since January 6 (rain below 1,100 m elevation) had reached 50-60 cm by the evening of January 8. Here you can see about 20 cm of snow up to this morning. Due to the cold air flowing in, the continued low temperatures have resulted in loose snow avalanches and sluffs on very steep slopes without the influence of the wind.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds out of the west, slightly strong, snow or rain, and a daytime high of 5 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -7 °C (as of 5:45 a.m.), with 3 cm of snow having fallen in the past 12 hours and 19 cm in the past 24 hours.
