Stormy weather instability is rapidly dissipating. However, at higher elevations, conditions are still not quite reassuring enough, so avoid terrain with large convex slopes or extremes that do not support a snowpack. Choose simple terrain that is not affected by the winds that have been blowing and that has no "terrain traps" below, and you will be able to enjoy a comfortable run. When doing so, be aware of slope changes. At lower elevations than the treeline, numerous glide cracks have formed and are hidden by fresh snow. There are crusts on the southern slopes, so ski at controlled speeds. Even if you feel the snowpack is stable, please continue to follow the principle of stopping in safe areas and skiing one at a time. Have a good day.
Watch out for wind slabs that remain in localized areas of extreme terrain.
Yesterday (11th), several size 1 wind slab avalanches were observed at the treeline and below treeline. In addition, numerous size 1 wet loose snow avalanches were observed on the lower elevation, south-facing steep slopes.
Stormy snow from January 6 settled rapidly yesterday (January 11) due to clear skies and solar radiation. At lower elevations than the treeline, crusts have formed on the steep south-facing slopes. On shaded slopes to the north, the snow remains dry. Observations below treeline have not revealed any significant problems at the boundary between storm snow and old snow.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, northerly winds during the day, cloudy, afternoon to afternoon, sunny, with a daytime high of 7 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -9 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
