Travel and Terrain Advice

Below treeline and treeline, conditions are generally safe, but watch out for unstable snow remaining on some extreme terrain. In alpine, watch out for slabs forming in terrain localities. Below treeline, glide cracks are hidden by recent snowfall. Watch for areas where the slope changes.

Avalanche Problem

There is very light snowfall on the main ridge with northerly winds averaging 10 m/s. Be aware of slabs forming in terrain localities.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (12th), a skier-triggered size 1 wind slab avalanche was reported on the eastern slope of the treeline.

Snowpack

Due to elevated temperatures and solar radiation over the past two days, the snowpack from previous storms is settling steadily. No significant vulnerability has been observed in the upper layer of snowpack. On steep, south-facing slopes at lower elevations than the treeline, crusts are forming on the snow surface.

Weather

A low-pressure system is passing through the area, and a temporary winter pressure pattern is forecast. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy skies, snow from morning to early afternoon, then clear skies, and daytime high temperatures of 5 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -4.7 °C (as of 5:00 pm), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
