Watch for newly formed wind slabs. As you travel, it is important to look for wind trails and to observe the surface conditions of the snowpack. In areas where the snow is very deep to the north, watch out for "terrain traps" such as deep gullies and depressions. A fall in such an area can be fatal if only a small amount of surrounding snow flows into it. If you choose simple terrain, unaffected by wind, you can enjoy great powder riding. Be aware that there are some rather nasty crusts on the south side at lower elevations.
Snowfall from yesterday moved in with strong northwest to north winds and formed slabs.
Snowfall since yesterday formed slabs.
Yesterday (13th), several size 1-1.5 loose snow avalanches were observed on the east-southeast slopes near the main ridge. In addition, several size 1 storm slab avalanches were observed at the treeline. These avalanches were naturally occurring or skier-induced.
New snow (10-15 cm) that fell from dawn to noon yesterday (13th) is on the surface of the snowpack. This new snow is on top of crusts formed by solar radiation on the steep slopes above 35° on the south side and on top of the old snow that is settling on the north side. In the treeline and alpine areas, this rapid snowfall has resulted in loose snow avalanches and storm slab avalanches. Yesterday, the winds have since subsided, but the main ridge is currently experiencing strong northwest to north winds averaging 10 m/s and up to 20 m/s instantaneously.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, clear skies, cloudy mornings and evenings, snow in places, and daytime highs of 7 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation (Hakuba), the temperature is -7.3 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
