Massive snowfall makes action difficult. Be aware of bonding storm slabs on steep slopes. Until the snowpack settles and gains strength, we recommend that you stay below treeline on slopes with moderate slopes. Even if you are on a loose slope, watch for large avalanche slopes overhead. Also, watch for "terrain traps" such as gullies, cliffs, standing trees, or other groups below you that could cause more damage in the event of an avalanche.
Beware of steep slopes
Yesterday (15th), there were reports of several human-triggered, storm-slab-induced (avalanche size 1) avalanches in the Kagura area, and a report of a human-triggered, wind-slab-induced avalanche (size 1) in the Tanigawa-dake area.
Snowfall that intensified during the day yesterday with strong westerly winds was over 50 cm near 1400 m. There is low density snow on the boundary surface with the old snow, and caution is needed for bonding. Crusts formed on the southern slope at lower elevations were buried on the 15th, requiring attention to bonding on the boundary surface. The middle part of the snowpack is settling and bonding.
As of 4:00 am, 18 cm of snow has fallen at AMeDAS Fujiwara over the past 24 hours, and snow continues to fall in the surrounding areas. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is forecasting a gradual buildup of high pressure, but due to the effects of a pressure trough and cold air, the foothills of northern Gunma Prefecture will be cloudy, sunny from midday, and snowy in places until dawn.
