These are days when the instability caused by a heavy snowfall remains only over certain terrain. In other words, terrain selection is very important. Look for traces of previous winds on the snow and be aware of the danger of new wind slabs forming with the current winds. Great powder riding is possible on slopes that are unaffected by the wind. In such areas, even slightly gentle slopes should be more than enough to enjoy. The mountain will be crowded today. Please be sure to stop in a safe spot and be aware of the movements of other groups above and below you. Remember that glide cracks are forming in various places up to the elevation zone below treeline and they are hidden under the new snow. Have a good day.
Be especially alert for wind slabs forming near the treeline. Avoid extreme terrain that is convex or does not support snowpack. Also, during the day, strong solar radiation and steep slopes of up to 40° often reduce the strength of wind slabs and destabilize them.
Beware of unstable snow remaining on very steep slopes. Where multiple factors combine, such as convexity and thin snowpack, there still remains the potential for avalanches to occur at human provocation.
Several size 1 wind slab avalanches were observed yesterday (17th) below treeline. There were also reports of shooting cracks. Information about Alpine is lacking.
After a brief period of clear skies, the snowfall of the last three days (about 120 cm of snowfall) constitutes the upper snowpack. The upper snowpack is under the influence of extremely strong northwest to north winds, which have formed wind slabs. Some hard old snow and rocks are exposed on the ridge tops that are being pounded by the wind. As of yesterday, it was observed that the windslab, although responsive to human stimulation, is gaining strength.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, northerly winds during the day, cloudy, sunny from midday, sunny in places, snow until morning, daytime high of 3 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -8.6 °C (as of 5:00 am), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
