These are days when the instability caused by a heavy snowfall remains only over certain terrain. In other words, terrain selection is very important. Look for traces of previous winds on the snow and be aware of the danger of new wind slabs forming with the current winds. Great ぽpower riding is possible on slopes that are unaffected by the wind. In such areas, even slightly gentle slopes should be more than enough to enjoy. The mountain will be crowded today. Please be sure to stop in a safe spot and be aware of the movements of other groups above and below you. Remember that glide cracks are forming in various places up to the elevation zone below treeline and they are hidden under the new snow. Have a good day.
No new avalanche reports were received yesterday (17th).
Snowfall over the past few days constitutes the upper snowpack layer. This snowpack is under the influence of northwest to north winds and is forming slabs. Below treeline, test results showed no response to significant stimuli as of yesterday. On the other hand, information at higher elevations is lacking and there is a situation of uncertainty.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a southerly wind, cloudy, with occasional snow or rain until midday, then clearing, with a daytime high of 6 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -8 °C (as of 5:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
