Travel and Terrain Advice

It will be a great day for mountain skiing. One thing to watch out for is the change in intensity of the slabs that have formed on very steep slopes that are highly affected by solar radiation. On slopes unaffected by wind, you can enjoy pleasant powder snow. This morning is low temperature by radiative cooling, so there should be many places to enjoy without gaining elevation. Please note that there are glide cracks in various places in the treeline and below treeline, which are hidden by new snow. Even if you feel that the snow is stable, continue to follow the principle behaviors such as stopping in a safe spot. Making such behavior a habit will make accidents smaller in the event of an emergency. Have a good day.

Avalanche Problem

ウインドスラブ Wind slab

ベース画像

Consider that a hard slab, formed on a very steep slope that is highly influenced by solar radiation, can trigger an avalanche by reducing its intensity during the day and triggering the thin part of the slab.

Watch out for unstable snow that remains in limited areas, such as extremely convex or very steep slopes with no undercarriage.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (18th), shooting cracks or very small loose snow avalanches were reported on a very few slopes.

Snowpack

Snow from previous stormy weather has increased in intensity. The upper snowpack is strongly influenced by wind, which extends into the galley in some places. On the other hand, in areas not under the influence of solar radiation and wind, low temperatures have led to low cohesion. Yesterday's clear skies have resulted in moist snow surfaces on the lower elevations and on the steep southern slopes.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, clear skies, mornings and evenings, cloudy skies, and daytime highs of 11 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -10.1 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours. At Alpine (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -6 °C (as of 5:00) with an average wind speed of 5 m/s.
