We are currently experiencing a widespread variability across all aspects and elevations. Careful route planning and decision making is required when travelling in the backcountry with conditions expected to change throughout the day as temperatures rise. Continue to re-evaluate the snowpack throughout the day and consider different problems based on your aspect or elevation.
Increased temperatures have added stress to the latest new snow which is settling. Be mindful of pockets of storm slab on all elevations and aspects throughout the day.
Pockets of wind slab have been observed in exposed terrain across eastly aspects. Remain cautions around ridgeline and in steep alpine terrain. Look for signs of fresh cornice formations or smooth wind pressed snow to indicate where the latest wind transported snow has been deposited.
With temperatures expected to rise above freezing and periods of sunshine forecasted there is a possibility of wet loose activity below treeline in steep terrain.
On the 18th a skier controlled size one wind slab was ski cut on an east north east aspect at 880m This pocket of slab was created from newly deposited wind transported snow near the tree line.
A great deal of variability exits in the snow pack across the different elevations bands and aspects. The recent increase in temperatures and periods of broken sunshine has heated to upper pack resulting in a thin curst on southerly aspects and heavy conditions on all other aspects at lower elevations. Above treeline previous north west winds have stripped the windward side and redistributed the latest snow onto lee slopes.
We can expect light westerly winds with sunshine throughout the day. Temperatures are likely to rise above freezing at lower elevations.
