The weather is stable and the day is as enjoyable for long tours as it was yesterday. For those gaining elevation, please be on the lookout for wind effects on the snow surface and watch out for wind slabs forming in terrain pockets. Also, the glide cracks are getting worse, so stay vigilant as you descend in elevation later in the tour. Be aware of the hazards above you as you enter the valley line. Don't forget your sunscreen. Have a good day.
Beware of convex and other triggering terrain.
It is reported that glide cracks continue to open.
A size 1 wind slab was reported yesterday (22nd) in isolated terrain in Alpine. Human caused by ski cut is an outbreak.
Continued clear skies and high temperatures have resulted in thicker Melt-Freeze crusts on the southern slopes at lower elevations, and glide cracks are opening further. On the other hand, on the northern slopes, the snow is generally dry above 1,000 m elevation. Due to the pressure trough above, the main ridge was covered with clouds at times, and there was some light snowfall at higher elevations. This light snowfall and the strong winds have formed localized small wind slabs, which responded to human stimulation yesterday.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a southerly wind, later northerly wind, sunny, sometimes cloudy, with a daytime high of 9 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -5.7 °C (as of 5:00 pm), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours. At Alpine (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -9.5 °C (as of 5:00) with an average wind speed of 12-13 m/s.
