The weather is stable and a day for long tours can be enjoyed. Please pay close attention to snow changes during the day on steep slopes that are highly affected by solar radiation. Also, glide cracks are becoming worse, so be vigilant later in the tour when you are losing elevation. Be aware of the hazards above you as you enter the valley line. Don't forget your sunscreen. Have a good day.
Higher temperatures than yesterday are forecast. Watch for snow changes during the day.
Stay away from slopes that already have glide cracks.
Yesterday (22nd), several wet loose snow avalanches of size 1-1.5 were observed on steep slopes at lower elevations.
Continued clear skies and high temperatures are increasing the thickness of the Melt-Freeze crust on the southern slopes of the treeline and below treeline, and glide cracks are opening further. On the northern slopes, on the other hand, the snow is generally dry above 1,000 m elevation.
Today, the area is expected to be affected by a pressure trough. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, later westerly winds, cloudy skies, rain or snow at night, and daytime high temperatures of 12 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -4 °C (as of 4:45 pm), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
