Travel and Terrain Advice

Those traveling to higher elevations should carefully examine the snow conditions, assuming that yesterday's instability is still present. The boundary surface between new and old snow is located at a shallow level, so it should be relatively easy to investigate. In doing so, it is important to think of yesterday and today as "different days. Look at the snow with fresh eyes. Tough crusts are forming at lower elevations. Please be careful not to fall down unintentionally in the second half of the tour. Have a good weekend.

Terrain selection should be based on the assumption that yesterday's avalanche conditions are still in place. Be especially wary of terrain that is convex and unsupported on the southeast side.

This assessment is based on no snowfall during the night. If you are acting, and if you observe fresh snow up to this morning, judge the hazard according to the amount.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (24th), several size 1-2 storm slab avalanches were observed on steep, east to south facing slopes in Alpine. They are naturally occurring or human-triggered. In addition, several size 1 loose snow avalanches were observed on the very steep north-facing slopes. All of these avalanches were caused by new snow that began around noon on the 23rd.

Snowpack

In some areas of the treeline and alpine, the bonding of new snow with old snow is poor, and this was manifested yesterday as avalanches. The amount of new snow is about 20 cm, with a little more accumulating in some areas due to the wind. Yesterday's fine weather has promoted settling and sintering of the snow south of the treeline. A pressure trough passed through during the night, which may have resulted in some weak snowfall in Alpine, but the amount is unknown.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, clear, then cloudy, snow late in the evening, and a daytime high of 4 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At AMeDAS Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -4.7 °C (as of 5:00 am), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours. At Alpine (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -13 °C (as of 5:00) with an average wind speed of 12 m/s from the northwest.
