The snow surface remains variable and subject to change throughout the day as we continue to experience temperatures rising to above freezing. Glide cracks are growing and are unpredictable with avoidance the best way to manage this hazard. Be wary of all creek crossings at present and the snow bridges become weak and thin.
Glide cracks continue to grow across the region. Predicting the timing of failure is difficult but the consequence of such an event is high. Minimise travel below these features where possible.
Hard pockets of unreactive wind slab remain in the alpine below ridgeline.
With continued warm temperatures and the freezing level rising towards 500m except the possibility of wet loos activity on steep terrain during the day. This will likely begin on southerly aspects earlier in the day.
A glide slab avalanche was reported 0n the 24th at approximately 600m on a southerly aspect. The observations were made from a distance with specific details limited.
Melt-freeze crusts can be found on all aspects below 500m, with increased crust thickness on solar aspects and steeper slopes. Isolated low-volume pockets of unreactive wind slabs remain in the alpine creating variable surface conditions. The upper snowpack contains various crusts showing little reactivity below the latest 5cm of new snow. Numerous warm days have settled the snowpack and Glide cracks continue to grow and are a cause of concern.
We continue with the pattern of warm temperatures rising above freezing during the day combined with broken sunshine and light northerly winds.
