Below Treeline Fair

In areas where there has been snowfall since last night, watch for storm slabs and loose snow avalanches. At higher elevations, there is snow that has not yet gained sufficient strength under this snowfall, so there is potential for large avalanches on the southern slopes where there are hard Melt-Freeze crusts. Be aware that below treeline, the new snow will make glide cracks difficult to see.
Watch out for slabs that have formed from snowfall up to this morning. At higher elevations, the previous snow has not yet gained sufficient strength to create the potential for large avalanches on the larger slopes to the south.
We are experiencing light wind conditions and heavy snowfall. Watch out for loose snow avalanches on very steep slopes.
Yesterday (25th), several size 2.5 slab avalanches were observed on the southeast slope at elevations between 2,600 and 2,700 meters. A size 1 loose snow avalanche was also reported in an alpine area unaffected by wind.
There is 30-40 cm of new snow below treeline from yesterday evening (25th) to this morning. This snowfall is mainly in the northern part of the Hakuba Valley. At higher elevations, this new snow is on top of previous snowfall of about 20 cm that has not been sufficiently intensified. The middle layer of snow cover has Melt-Freeze crusts on the south side and older snow that is in the process of sintering on the north side. Below this layer, no instability of concern has been observed.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy skies, snow in places until late afternoon, and a daytime high of 5 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At AMeDAS Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -3.8 °C (as of 5:00 pm), with 10 cm of snow having fallen in the past 12 hours. At Alpine (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -13 °C (as of 5:00) with an average wind speed of 9 m/s from the north.
