Travel and Terrain Advice

Wind slabs are expected to form on the ridge and just below the branch ridges due to wind-driven snow movement since last night. Watch for induced wind slabs where bonding has not progressed. Also, be aware of open glide cracks at lower elevations and the possibility of glide avalanches from cliff-like slopes. Do not enter the lower part of such slopes or pass through them quickly. When regrouping after skiing, try to remove the avalanche terrain and regroup in the safest place possible, such as on top of a ridge.

Be careful of steep slopes on the ridge and just below the branch ridge.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (26th), there were reports of several human-triggered, wind-slab avalanches (size 1-1.5) just below the ridge near 1400m.

Snowpack

Recent snowfall of about 5-15 cm is expected to be redistributed by moderate northerly winds since last night, forming a windslab downwind. In the Kagura area, low-density snow and a strong temperature gradient are observed on the boundary with the old snow, so caution is required for future bonding. The old snow on the southerly slopes is crusting. No report of observed fragility from mid to lower snowpack.

Weather

As of 4:00, the temperature at AMeDAS Fujiwara is -5.5°C. No new snowfall in the past 12 hours. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting high pressure, but a low pressure system will develop on the southern coast of Honshu and move south of the Kii Peninsula during the night. The system will be affected by a pressure trough and moist air, so the forecast is cloudy and sometimes sunny.
