Travel and Terrain Advice

Those raising elevation should be aware of wind slabs that form on the terrain pocket. Slabs that form on terrain that is convex or unsupported can be easily triggered by a skier. Even when the snowpack is stable, continue to consider basic behavioral practices in the avalanche terrain. The habituation of such behavior will reduce the damage in the event of an emergency. Glide cracks continue to be a problem. Pass quickly under cracked slopes.

概要

Avalanche

A size 1.5 wind slab was ski cut yesterday on a cross-loaded terrain feature. It ran on a previously wind-scoured surface. Loading was caused by moderate North winds. It was very predictable but propagated and ran further than expected. It occurred in the Far west forecast zone at the tree line on a Southeast aspect. A Loose, wet size one avalanche was also reported on a south aspect at the tree line was also reported.

Snowpack

The mid and lower snowpack is settled and well-bonded. The surface is highly variable, A trace of new snow was reported in some areas in the last 24 hours. A melt-freeze crust is found on many aspects below 600m and up to 1400m on the southern aspects. Surface facets can be found on all aspects early in the mornings and have remained on polar aspects all day. North winds yesterday redistributed the snow at the tree line and above, creating new isolated reactive wind slabs on lee and cross-loaded features.

Weather

Another day of Sunshine, light Northeast winds, and mild daytime temperatures. The freezing level is expected to rise to 400m mid-day.
