Below Treeline Fair Remaining local instability
信頼度:○ good □ Fair △ Low
This is a day when certain terrain still has the instability that caused the avalanche yesterday. In other words, terrain selection is key. Those gaining elevation should carefully observe the slope snowpack and notice any slab formations. It is also important to avoid convex or unsupported terrain and to check for "terrain traps" below you. Glide crack conditions may be difficult to recognize in some areas due to new snow. Be alert where the slope changes.
There is low density snow under the slab, making it more responsive to human stimulation
Consider that temperatures are low and yesterday's instability is continuing.
Yesterday (26th), a size 1 loose snow avalanche and a size 2 glide avalanche were reported below treeline. Numerous reports of avalanches have been received in the nearby alpine Hakuba area, so it is necessary to assume that similar conditions existed at higher elevations.
20-40 cm of new snow is on top of the snow that is advancing Melt-Freeze crusts to the south and sintering to the north. Instability remains within the new snow or at the boundary with the old snow, which yesterday produced a slab avalanche.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, northerly winds during the day, cloudy, and sunny in the evening, with a daytime high of 9 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -10 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
