Travel and Terrain Advice

Exercise the utmost caution on wind slabs that exist in certain terrain. Hard snow surfaces do not mean safety, and attempting to ski cut into hard wind slabs is a high-risk action. Avoiding terrain with easily triggered terrain features is the best option. Choose simple terrain that is not affected by wind and you will enjoy great powder snow. Glide cracks are hidden by this new snow. Use extreme caution where the slopes change. The mountain will be crowded today. Please keep an eye on what other groups are doing and use the safe zones well. Have a great weekend.

Avalanche Problem

ウインドスラブ Wind slab

Extremely strong winds can create wind slabs in various terrain pockets, not only on simple downwind slopes, but also on the sides of tributary ridges and even the bottom of gully terrain. Be alert for new slabs forming on convex or unsupported terrain.

Note the unstable slabs that remain on very steep terrain, unaffected by the wind.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (31st), a size 1 loose snow avalanche and shooting crack were observed on a very steep slope below treeline. Both were caused by ski cuts and other activities. No information has been received at higher elevations.

Snowpack

There is 100-125 cm of snow from this stormy weather below treeline and it is advancing settling. Yesterday, at the lower elevations where the sun was shining, it was more advanced, with small sluffs and other flows on the north side. In addition, there was an extremely strong northerly wind yesterday on the main ridge, reaching a maximum instantaneous wind speed of 30 m/s. Due to this, the upper lifts were closed at several ski resorts.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy skies and, in places, snow at dawn, with a daytime high of 4 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -3.8 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours. At the main ridge (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -13 °C, with northerly winds averaging 15 m/s and maxing out at 22 m/s.
