At higher elevations where snow bonding is less likely to progress, keep an eye out for induced storm slabs that remain on extremely steep slopes. Warmer temperatures are forecast during the day. Be aware of the possibility of loose snow avalanches from large southerly steep slopes. When regrouping after skiing, be sure to leave the avalanche terrain and regroup in the safest place possible, such as on a ridge top. Be aware of other groups above and below you.
Extremely steep slopes noted
Note large steep slopes that increase in size when they occur.
Yesterday (2/2), there was a report of a naturally occurring loose snow avalanche (size 1.5) and a human-triggered slab avalanche (size 1.5) observed on an extremely steep southerly slope. Localized glide avalanches were also reported on the southerly slopes.
The snowfall from the stormy weather since the 30th has been settling and gaining strength. No significant vulnerability has been reported at the boundary between the interior of this snowfall and the old snow. Snowfall with low density and large grain size has been observed on the surface of the snowpack, and caution should be exercised in bonding with future snowfall. The snow surface is expected to melt and form crusts on southerly slopes at lower elevations due to yesterday's sunny slopes.
As of 4:00, the temperature at AMeDAS Fujiwara is -0.8°C. No new snowfall in the past 12 hours. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting cloudy skies over northern Gunma Prefecture with snow showers in some areas in the evening, as the area will be covered by high pressure but subject to the effects of a pressure trough and cold air.
