Travel and Terrain Advice

Overall, this is a low avalanche danger day. However, two things should be noted One is that in the very steep terrain to the north and east, the stormy snow may still react to human stimulus. The other is that at higher elevations, new, smaller wind slabs may be forming in terrain pockets due to the winds from this morning. Both of these could have serious consequences if there is a "terrain trap" lower down the slope. In addition, southerly winds are coming in and significant warming is forecast. Any sunshine will facilitate this, so watch for snow changes during the day on the steep south-facing slopes below treeline. Remember that there are numerous glide cracks in the forest, hidden by storm snow.

Yesterday, 5-10 cm of snowfall with a grain size of 2-3 mm fell near the treeline. Where this snow has been moved by winds since this morning and has formed new thin windslabs, the area may be sensitive to human stimulation. Even if the overall snowpack feels stable, be alert for unstable slabs present in terrain pockets.

概要

Avalanche

No new avalanches were reported yesterday (2nd).

Snowpack

It has been observed that storm snow is settling steadily. The instability has not yet been completely eliminated, but the trend is good. At the treeline and alpine, the wind slab formed by the previous strong northwest winds is on the leeward side. It is also strengthening here, but it is not yet completely stable. Yesterday the winds subsided, but from about 3:00 this morning, strong northwest winds have begun to blow again.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, cloudy, occasionally sunny, with snow in the afternoon, and a daytime high of 10 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -0.8 °C (as of 5:00 am), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours. At the main ridge (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -7 °C, with northwest winds averaging 15 m/s and a maximum of 20 m/s at the moment.
