Travel and Terrain Advice

Generally safe avalanche conditions. At higher elevations, watch out for unstable slabs that remain on very steep terrain. Numerous glide cracks have formed in the forest and are hidden by stormy snow. Please be very careful where the slope angles change. In addition, elevated temperatures are forecast for today. On the southern slopes of the below treeline, where there is a strong influence of sunny slopes, watch out for snow changes during the day.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (2nd), a number of size 1 wet loose snow avalanches and snowballs were observed at lower elevations.

Snowpack

Below treeline, snow from previous stormy weather is observed to be settling well. On the southern slopes, which were strongly affected by yesterday's elevated temperatures and sunny slopes, loose snow avalanches and snowballs of wet snow have been observed, which have frozen hard during the night. A small amount of new snow with large grain size fell on the southern edge of the mountain range, but not enough to affect the snowpack.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, later from the west, strong and clear, with rain or snow in the afternoon, and daytime high temperatures of 11 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -5 °C (as of 5:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
