Dangerous avalanche conditions. Careful route setting and conservative decision making are required on this day. Even if the snowfall temporarily abates during the day, the avalanche danger level will remain the same and significant snowfall is forecast in the future. Even if you are below treeline, avoid steep slopes with convex or unsupported features. Choose carefully safe points off avalanche terrain where you can rest and wait for your companions to ski. For inexperienced groups, we recommend skiing in fresh snow within the ski area. When doing so, please be sure to observe the ski area.
Above us, a strong westerly wind is blowing. This wind travels over terrain and around slopes, forming wind slabs at various locations.
Because fresh snow is deep and soft, even a small avalanche, if swept into a small terrain depression, can be fatal because of its deep burial. Maximum attention to terrain is required.
Yesterday (6th), a size 1-1.5 storm slab avalanche was observed on the south slope of the below treeline. No information was received regarding higher elevations due to stormy weather.
Snowfall, which began recently (4th), has reached 120-160 cm in the northern part of Myoko. It has been observed that the underlying layer of snow from the stormy weather is sintering and slowly gaining strength. On the other hand, below treeline in the southern part of the mountain range, faceting snow was observed on top of Melt-Freeze crusts, and this bonding condition needs to be confirmed. This is because the adjacent Hakuba mountain area shows instability.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting westerly winds, strong, snowy conditions, and a daytime high of 3 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature was -10 °C (as of 5:45 a.m.), with 16 cm of snow having fallen in the past 12 hours and 21 cm in the past 24 hours. At 5:26 a.m. on February 7, the Niigata District Meteorological Office is forecasting 80 cm of snowfall along the mountains of the Joetsu Region in the 24-hour period ending at 6:00 a.m. on February 8.
