Snow conditions in the mountains are shifting from high hazard conditions for the entire mountain to high hazard conditions only on certain slopes. At such times, we are more prone to errors in situational awareness. The instability of storm snow has not yet been fully resolved. Please take a few moments to check on snowpack conditions while making prudent terrain choices and conservative decision making. We also need to assess instability for new snow that has fallen through this morning.
The winds are subsiding, but we still need to be vigilant for wind slabs. A hard snow surface does not mean safety. Once slab formation is recognized, it is important to move to slopes with a slower slope.
Low temperatures continue at higher elevations, and the instability of the stormy snow is slowly resolving. Be alert for unstable snow on very steep slopes.
Yesterday (9th), a size 1 wind slab avalanche was reported in the below treeline. This avalanche was caused by ski cuts. No information has been received at higher elevations.
The peak of the cold air has ended, but weak snow continues to fall due to the ongoing winter pressure pattern. In the western and northern areas of the Myoko Mountains, 15-20 cm of snow has fallen as of this morning. In the below treeline areas, it has been observed that the lower layer of snow from the stormy weather is sintering and strengthening. On the other hand, avalanches have been observed where wind slabs have formed.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting westerly winds, snow, and a daytime high of 3 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -8 °C (as of 5:45 a.m.).
