Travel and Terrain Advice

Monitor storm instabilities, changing weather and look for slab development as you travel through terrain. Deep snow immersion is a concern in many areas - alway ski with a partner. The persistent slab problem is best managed with conservative terrain choices.

NW winds have re-distributed the new snow to leeward slopes.

Cooler temperatures and limited solar input will make the storm slab less reactive today.

The Jan. 28th persistent weak layer is getting deeper in the snowpack and the surface hoar grains are likely decomposing. Recent tests have not produced results on this layer however continued investigation and vigilance is required.

概要

Avalanche

Some loose dry avalanches were reported on steep terrain yesterday. No other avalanches were reported.

Snowpack

20cms of new snow fell overnight in the Kutchan area with smaller accumulations in the North near Kiroro (3cms) and Rusutsu (5cms). The new snow brings the storm total to 25-40cms. This overlies up 70-130cms of settled low density snow on polar aspects and areas that did not receive solar input on Feb. 8th. On solar aspects the new snow overlies a thin melt freeze crust that formed on Feb. 8th. ECT tests in the Kiroro area yesterday did not produce propagating results on the Jan. 28 PWL however this layer is now so deep that deep tap tests will be more suitable to determine is reactivity. Investigation of this layer will continue today.

Weather

The NW flow begins to shift to the West today bringing continued light snowfall and cool temps. 5-10cms of snow is expected through the day with mostly overcast skies and a high of -2C in the valley.
