Travel and Terrain Advice

The cold air has left and temperatures are gradually rising. As a result, the upper snowpack is beginning to settle down nicely. However, in areas where there has been heavy snowfall up to this morning, the newly formed instability needs to be addressed. Very steep slopes with slab features in the upper snowpack should be avoided. In addition, the storm snow is so deep that even a small avalanche can easily bury you if the terrain is depressed. When skiing in the forest, it is wise to work with a buddy system.

概要

Avalanche

A size 1 loose snow avalanche of size 1 was reported yesterday (10th) below treeline. No information has been received at higher elevations.

Snowpack

Due to the continuing winter pressure pattern, only areas where snow clouds are passing through are experiencing more snowfall than other areas. In the southern part of the mountain area, about 10 cm of snow had fallen by this morning, and 20-25 cm in the northern part. It has been observed in the below treeline that the storm snow (beginning February 4) is steadily sintering and consolidating in the lower layers. At the top of the snowpack, there is still some instability from the most recent snowfall, so it is necessary to consider that on very steep slopes, avalanches can occur with human stimulation. And with strong westerly winds blowing in the alpine, wind slabs are the main concern at higher elevations.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northwesterly winds, slightly stronger, later westerly winds, snow, cloudy in the evening, and a daytime high of 4 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -7 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), and 8 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
