Travel and Terrain Advice

Rain is falling at lower elevations. Watch for glide avalanches from extremely steep slopes with thin snowpack and glide cracks. At higher elevations, watch for wind slabs forming on steep slopes just below the ridge due to strong westerly winds. Snowfall is forecast to intensify. Snowfall amounts and winds will increase avalanche danger. Please be aware of changing weather conditions.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (12th), a wind slab (Scythe 2) was triggered by explosives in the Tanigawa-dake area below treeline. In addition, several glide avalanches were observed on the southerly slopes near 1800m. Numerous storm slab (size 2-3) outbreaks that occurred during the recent stormy weather have been observed in various areas.

Snowpack

The stormy weather that began today has started to form wind slabs due to rain at lower elevations and snowfall accompanied by strong westerly winds at higher elevations. The low-density, large-grained snowfall is deeply buried by this snowfall, and bonding is required. On the southerly slopes, crusts are deeply buried and bonding is a concern.

Weather

As of 4:00, the temperature at Amedas Fujiwara is 1.8°C. Rain is falling in the vicinity. Around 1,300 m elevation, about 2 cm of snow has fallen. The JMA is forecasting cloudy skies and occasional snow in northern Gunma Prefecture until early afternoon as a frontal system moves across eastern Japan and a low pressure system moves westward.
