Travel and Terrain Advice

This is the start of a new round of stormy weather. However, its duration will likely be short-lived, with a weather recovery forecast for tomorrow. At higher elevations, watch out for instability in the new snow that has been falling since yesterday afternoon. Snow that fell when winds were light is hiding under new snow accompanied by extremely strong winds since dawn. Avoid large slopes and take safety margins in terrain. When visibility is poor, it is difficult to notice hazards on slopes above you. Use topographic maps and consider the avalanche terrain. For inexperienced skiers, resort skiing is recommended. It is fun to ski on the packed snow course.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (12th), a naturally occurring slab avalanche was observed on the southeast slope of Alpine. Details are unknown as the observation was made from a distance. In addition, several old avalanche tracks were reported that may have occurred during stormy weather.

Snowpack

Yesterday morning was the first fine weather in a long time, but there was a very strong westerly wind blowing on the main ridge. When the wind direction changed to the south around noon, clouds quickly spread and snowfall began. Later, temperatures rose and rain fell at lower elevations. Currently, temperatures are dropping, and at higher elevations, snowfall is accompanied by extremely strong westerly winds. New snow at the treeline and alpine limits is likely to be about 40 cm. The freezing level is likely to be around 1,600 m.
