This is the start of new stormy weather. At higher elevations, watch out for instability in the new snow that has been falling since yesterday afternoon. Snow that fell when winds were light is hiding under fresh snow with extremely strong winds since dawn. Avoid large slopes and take safety margins in terrain. When visibility is poor, it is difficult to notice hazards on slopes above you. Use topographic maps and consider the potential of the terrain.
Take special care at higher elevations where it did not rain during the night.
No new avalanches were reported yesterday (12th).
Warmer temperatures during the night brought rainfall and sleet to the lower elevations. Currently, temperatures are beginning to drop and snow is falling at higher elevations. About 20 mm of precipitation has been observed in the past 12 hours, and 25-30 cm of new snow is expected at higher elevations. Winds are also blowing extremely strong northwest winds overhead, and this new snowfall is being affected by these winds. The freezing level is generally considered to be around 1,600 m.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northwest winds, strong, then westerly, snow or rain, cloudy nights, and daytime highs of 4 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -3 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with 2 cm of snow having fallen in the past 12 hours.
