Be alert for wind slabs formed by extremely strong northerly winds. The wind can turn around along terrain and create slabs in many different places. In addition to simple slabs on the downwind side of a ridge, slabs formed by cross loading on the side slopes of a branch ridge can also be dangerous. If the slope is terrain with convex or unsupported features, the slab may be sensitive. While using safe terrain, act accordingly and look for simple terrain that is not affected by wind.
Strong northerly winds have been blowing continuously since yesterday. Yesterday, the lifts in the upper area of the ski resort were closed due to the wind.
New snow from the past two days is not yet stable enough. Watch out for slabs forming on very steep slopes.
Due to the stormy weather yesterday (13th), no new avalanche reports have been received in the mountain areas.
After a sunny day on February 12, light rain to snowfall at lower elevations (generally below 1,600 m) and snowfall at higher elevations continued until yesterday evening. This new snowfall was 30-40 cm below treeline and was influenced by extremely strong northerly winds. Bonding at the interface between new and old snow at higher elevations is highly uncertain due to a lack of information.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, sunny, occasionally cloudy, snowy in places until late evening, and a daytime high of 6 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -3.7 °C (as of 5:00 am), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours. On the main ridge (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -13 °C, with northerly winds averaging 20 m/s and a maximum of 30 m/s at the moment.
