Travel and Terrain Advice

This is a day when terrain selection is extremely important on two fronts. First, the instability of rough weather (windslab/stormslab) still remains in terrain with features. Second, the mountain is likely to be crowded with skiers, so please be mindful of your relationship with other groups and make good use of safe terrain. Do not attempt to ski cut at the top when there are other groups below. Hard snow surfaces are exposed on wind-controlled ridges. Be careful of slipping and falling. There is excellent powder snow in the trees unaffected by the wind. Have a good weekend.

Avalanche Problem

Mountain winds are subsiding, but remain vigilant for wind slabs. Stabilization of wind slabs will vary from place to place. Also, expect destabilization on steep slopes exposed to strong daytime solar radiation, which is also affected by rising temperatures. Choosing slopes with gentle slopes and avoiding isolated terrain can be effective.

In very steep, isolated terrain, for example, still consider that avalanches can be triggered by human stimulation. Avoid localities that have multiple features that are prone to triggering, such as convexity, lack of underpinning, etc.

概要

Avalanche

A size 2 glide avalanche was observed yesterday (14th) at a very low elevation. No information has been received at higher elevations.

Snowpack

Weak rainfall on the night of February 12 wetted the snowpack up to around 1,600 m elevation, creating a thin Melt-Freeze crust. Limited observations indicate that there do not appear to be any major problems at this boundary, but continued investigation is warranted. The snowfall over the past 3 days has been influenced by very strong westerly winds, causing wind slabs to form in various locations. Warmer temperatures than yesterday are also forecast for today, so caution should be exercised on slopes with glide cracks.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, northerly winds during the day, clear skies, cloudy in the evening, and a daytime high of 11 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -6 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
