Travel and Terrain Advice

JAN's avalanche bulletin is not a "forecast" but a "current condition" based on the data available at this time. As alerted in the weather forecast, the avalanche danger level will increase depending on the extent of rainfall or snowfall starting around noon. The old snow surface is diverse, so the bonding of new snow with old snow can be different. Today, the weather is clearly deteriorating and will continue to do so. If something goes wrong, you need to have a plan to get to the base of the mountain safely with your companions. The snow surface below treeline will be difficult to ski, so inexperienced skiers may find it more enjoyable to ski in the ski resorts.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (16th), a size 1.5 glide avalanche, numerous loose snow avalanches of point source wet avalanches, and snowballs were observed below treeline.

Snowpack

Past clear skies, high temperatures, and some light rainfall have resulted in spring conditions below treeline. With the exception of the northern slopes, the snow surfaces were moist or wet, which froze with the drop in temperatures until this morning. The effects of strong sunny slopes, even on the southern slopes of the treeline, have created a thin Melt-Freeze crust. In addition, hard old snow surfaces have been exposed and shukabras have formed in areas affected by past storms. Snowfall from today will be on the various snow surfaces.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, then northwest, rain, and snow in the evening, with a daytime high of 8 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At 5:28 a.m. on February 17, the Niigata District Meteorological Office is forecasting 60 cm of snowfall along the mountains of Joetsu in the 24-hour period ending at 6:00 a.m. on February 18.
