Dangerous avalanche conditions due to heavy snowfall. Be careful of triggering storm slabs that are forming on steep slopes. We recommend that you stay below treeline on slopes and on ridges. Even if you are on a loose slope, watch out for avalanches from large avalanche start zones overhead. When reassembling after skiing, please try to leave the avalanche terrain and stay as close to the ridge top as possible to ensure safety. Stormy weather is forecast to continue. Please be aware of changing conditions due to snowfall and wind-driven snow movement.
Beware of open steep slopes with few trees.
No new avalanches were reported yesterday (19th).
Due to solar radiation and elevated temperatures on the 16th, crusts formed on the southerly direction and on all slopes below about 1400 m, and were buried by snowfall from noon on the 17th. Low-density snowfall may have buried the boundary surface, and bonding should be noted. Be aware of bonding of the upper part of the new snowfall as more than 50-60 cm of snow has fallen since last evening. At lower elevations, crusts are thin and weak due to the cold nighttime temperatures. The middle part of the snowpack is settling and bonding.
As of 4:00 pm, 30 cm of snow had fallen in the past 12 hours at 700 m elevation at AMeDAS Fujiwara, and 48 cm had fallen near 1300 m. Strong snowfall is continuing at present. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting snow and occasional cloudiness in the foothills of northern Gunma Prefecture due to the continued strong winter pressure pattern and the influence of a pressure trough and cold air.
